The concert was pieced together from numerous sources, it was remastered both video and audio, and uploaded on the 10th of August 2024, by YouTube channel hAnD90.

You can find an excellent explanation of the background to this meticulously put back together again recording, in the description box of the video.

The concert in Johannesburg is the only recording available of the four concerts of the South African leg of the tour.

The four would remain one of a kind;
The band would not visit South Africa again, until 2013.

Johannesburg was the final concert we have a registration from, from 1995.
The South African leg of the tour was originally the last part of the These Days Tour.

Due to numerous circumstances the tour was known under different names, but for this blog I round both their 1995 and 1996 concerts (more about those later) off to being the “These Days Tour”, because These Days was their 1995 album that was tied to the tour.

So ultimately South Africa 1995 was not the ending because in spring/ summer of 1996 Bon Jovi added a victory lap to their These Days Tour, visiting both Japan as well as Europe for the second time.

These had been the two places where both the reception of the album, as well as their concerts had done really well, and the added 1996 concerts would become the best they ever gave.

It was like the 1995 concerts, but smoothed out and thought through even more. The concerts were far less “messy” than 1995 had been.
The 1995 name changes of the tour had been symbolic for the mayhem Bon Jovi had been dealing with.
If you see their 1995 touring schedule, combined with their off-tour performances, it was absolute madness without a day of rest.

By 1996 only the good had remained, and those shows would become their best work, technically.

Johannesburg 1995 still carries that rawness, that realness, the year had been marked with throughout.
It’s not perfect, but there is a tension there that 1996 would no longer have…

Rumors have it the first South Africa show, 28 November Cape Town, had even been “off”.
Although we’ll never know, because we don’t have the recording.

The December concert of Johannesburg 1995, would be their last recorded accomplishment of that year.

And a reminder that sometimes almost perfect?
Was better than perfect could ever be..

ABOUT THIS SERIES

In 2022 -2023 I started the “concerts on this day” series,
resulting in many blogposts on the Daily Bon Jovi Yoga blog and two full fledged playlists on YouTube, covering the whole year.

Afterwards, I have not been consistently keeping these playlists updated.
Even though many concerts got new uploads.

Today, 14th of August 2024, I am committing to that task again.

Be fearlessly contemporary! | gem sized post# 4 (the end) about Bon Jovi’s docu series

Night had set over the Mexican crowd as the wind carried Jonโ€™s words away.
34 Years later the director would use a snippet of the speech, and chose the Thank you, Goodnight reference, as his title.
But the rest of Guadalajaraโ€™s speech would go unused.

But maybe, just maybe, rock nโ€™ roll was never about that one phrase that clicked.
Not about those moments when your words managed to touch eternity.
Not about that time you made the right decision, or about when you smoothed out the rough patches and you created something that was perfect.

Maybe rock nโ€™ roll is in the one hundred women that should have been a perpetually growing number.

In the guitarist like the Chinese nightingale;
Replaced by the emperor for a mechanical one, trimmed with jewels. Forever singing the same song.

Maybe rock nโ€™ roll is not in wanting to matter, but in fearlessly being contemporary.

Saying things that will be forgotten, before the sun will rise the next day.

To speak up and to commemorate the political riots, that had surrounded the concert, for the 33.000 people who had waited the whole day for the second show at Estadio Tecnolรณgico in Guadalajara.

To keep talking, as if in an endless conversation, locking in each and every one of the 20.000 people at the the Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, as if itโ€™s just the bunch of you hanging out in a bar.

And maybe rock nโ€™ roll is thanking the enthusiastic and supportive audience at the Rosemont Horizon, over and over again, realizing that even if your career would end the next day because an unimpressed music journalist would write that one bad review that will be the death verdict of your career;
Tonight, you are with friends.

Maybe timeless rock ‘n roll is not created by hard work and planning ahead and doing the thing thatโ€™s wise, let alone by doing the thing thatโ€™s proper.

But by your heart, your soul, your whole entire being oozing, shouting, and roaring;
โ€œYES!โ€

And loving every minute of it.

Things the mighty These Days tour could not bring | gem sized post# 3 about the docu series

The documentary shows how on the 1995 These Days Tour, all band members had their partners and children with them on the road.
And from an objective standpoint, the 1995 tour with the families present, resulted in their best live performances.

But it will never be my, preference.

Less than three years apart, but to me the 1995 Tour recordings no longer have that all-in;
Ready-to-give-my-life-for-this GUSTO;
Not the Going to have to carry-me-off-stage-half dead URGENCY;
That were the hallmark, of 1993.

The perfection, and the properness of what is known in fandom as 1995โ€™s
mighty These Days Tour?

Give me 1987โ€™s random messiness, the rants about subjects I know nothing about;
Give me Richieโ€™s birthday show performing โ€œWeโ€™re an American Bandโ€ with Cinderella on stage.
Give me Jon risking his life flying over the crowd playing โ€œNever Say Goodbyeโ€ from the back of the venue;
And give me the piano-driven Bob Seger cover Drift Away, melt me with your singalong sorcery.

And, instead of four episodes of docu series?
Give me that piercing thing of beauty that was Jonโ€™s goodbye speech, wrapping up that gruesomely long New Jersey Syndicate Tour in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“Crowd puts Jon Bon Jovi out of a job” | Bon Jovi 28 May 1995 Nijmegen, The Netherlands | unlocked after 28 years, 7 months and 2 weeks

Welcome to the second in a new series for this blog!

This Rock Star Writer blog will from now on be host to posts about live concerts from 1983 to 1996;
A position previously held by the Daily Bon Jovi Yoga blog, but that blog has found its purpose in its latest iteration;
As home to daily Bon Jovi yoga.
You can sign up for those at the Daily Bon Jovi Yoga blog– , the previous host to this series.

So now that we’ve moved the 20th century Bon Jovi concerts, to this Rock Star Writer blog, what’s up next?

Well, that’s a no brainer because there has been an event as significant to Dutch Bon Jovi fans, as the upcoming cosmic event of Pluto moving into Aquarius (which is tomorrow, the 20th of January. It will stay there for 20 years only coming back to Capricorn one more time, when it retrogades Sept-Nov 2024. ) is to astronomers and astrologers.

Nijmegen 1995 got uploaded!

On the 11th of January 2024, at 10.15 PM Central European Time, the recording of Bon Jovi, Goffertpark, Nijmegen of 28th of May 1995, entered the orbit of YouTube, where it will stay for the duration of the medium.
Nijmegen1995, has proven to be one of the slowest moving elements and many thought it had died out long ago.
Few knew we would see any of it in the 21st century.

But now that it has, it has caught the eye of researchers, in particular because there had been many stories going around about the nature of it.
It was known as “the weird one”, where something in the setlist or sequencing had been irregular or unusual, up to the point the crowd was said to have left in confusion and that the setlist had not worked.

With the recording spinning into our hemisphere, researchers were keen to have a look at it!

The first ones immediately noticed that, as it had been rumored, “Wanted Dead or Alive” was missing from the setlist.
A song also referred to as “The Anthem” in the Jovi Universe.

A commonly shared conclusion is that this was done because of the bad weather conditions;
Skipping this song, which comes in an extended version and is introduced by an extra instrumental song by guitarist Richie Sambora, meant two to three others songs could be played before the rain and lightning would force the band to stop the show.

It is believed this is what caused the setlist to start shifting, and perhaps more importantly, caused the lack of a proper ending.
Leaving the crowd, and at least one researcher who has been listening to this show for a week and still had to rush to have her report ready for the weekend, confused.

Time stamped:
Here you can listen to Jon Bon Jovi saying goodbye to the crowd, after the final song.
Something he never does: the actual factual ending, after the encores, should speak for itself.
The crowd shouting for more, reveals it hasn’t.

Yet reports from those who had actually been there, said it had been a great show! A true party!ย
It was this discrepancy that now had a chance of being solved, by listening to the material.

It is a good thing this research was in no way corporate nor government funded, because nothing new came to the surface;
Nijmegen 1995 had been BOTH one big party, as well as confusing because of the ending, and one of the shorter (if not the shortest?! More research required!) shows.
Although the length cannot be seen separate from the fact that three other bands were on the same bill;
Even without rain, it was not the night to take forever.

1995 in Nijmegen stands out, even for its time, by a crowd knowing every word, singing loudly and quite well too!
Enthusiastic, committed, and clearly not afraid of any rain.

It all becomes even more remarkable if you realize this was the fourth band they saw that day.

Top crowd interacting moments:

14:58 “Goodevening Nijmay-gen!!!” And something about crying angels, referring to the rain. Similar words to 2019 in Nijmegen, when it rained as well.

28:45 “You guys are gonna put me out of a job!” Jon Bon Jovi interrupting the crowd who have kicked off Always singing it for him and to him.

1:06:30 Sleep When I’m Dead intermezzo sing along

1:18:00 Jon teasing to stop Bad Medicine and flirting with a big blowup doll on stage

1:24:08 Returning for an encore, when the crowd has almost torn the park to pieces with their “Olรฉ olรฉ” singing, in their thirst for an encore.
Flirting with the crowd in this case, about how the rain makes it as if they’re all together taking a shower, and introducing Steven van Zandt, the guitarist from Bruce Springsteen’s The E-Streetband, and someone who is very popular in The Netherlands.

And then my notes go blank, and I thought I just needed to listen to it a few more times in order to be able to put my finger on it.
Until I remembered, this was of course exactly what all the fuss had been about all those years;
The ending is confusing and not coherent.

With the recording now having entered our galaxy, I suggest we forget that bit, and give this show a new pitch:
It’s the one where the crowd put Jon Bon Jovi out of a job.
