#56 Full Moon High
| life lessons in Bon Jovi songs

Welcome back, Jovi friends!
Life lessons in Bon Jovi songs continues with Full Moon High

Full Moon High is our third outtake from the album New Jersey.

An outtake is a song that was written and recorded for a specific album, but that was ultimately not included.
Full Moon High was not included on New Jersey (1988).

New Jersey was the album that was released after their biggie, Slippery When Wet. Bon Jovi were now the biggest rock stars on the planet, and the band had to deliver. And their fourth album, by all standards, did just that.

Unfamiliar with the song?

context: DOUBLE NEW JERSEY
New Jersey would (and definitely “should”!) have been a double album, if it had been up to the band.
The record company blocked it, on grounds that they didn’t think fans would be able to pay for the higher price.

The extra songs from New Jersey start at “Rosie” all the way to Bon Jovi’s secret gem “Let’s Make It Baby”.

1. Welcome to another episode 00:00
Of Life lessons in Bon Jovi songs

Is it the Full Moon vibe?!

Because on full moons there are a lot more incidents at night (just ask any bar tender or law enforcement);
And I’m definitely having trouble keeping my temper!

Apparently Full Moons are when your telephone cancels your camera filters, AND the backup option, AND you discover some very questionable lyrics in a Bon Jovi song you thought you had a light and fun life lesson to share for;
And makes you figure everything out from scratch again.
Preferably without swearing.

But we’ll see how it goes.

2. Full Moon High 03:00
We’re at the third outtake!
An outtake is a song that was written for a specific album, but that was never included on the album.
In this case, Full Moon High was not included on the album New Jersey (1988)

Full Moon High was not on the 2004 Box Set “100.000.000 Bon Jovi fans can’t be wrong;
But it was on the 2014 Deluxe edition of New Jersey.

—
Not mentioned in the video:
The song was originally titled “River of Love” on demos from the 90s.
The name was changed on its release in 2014, to avoid confusion with a Richie Sambora song.

3. The thing we need to talk about 05:30
I’m gonna make this quick.
But yes there is something lurking in the lyrics here that I need to address.
* addresses the thing in video *

Including an interesting and positive story about Embodied Consent, becoming a more well-known and more broadly applied principle.

4. What I was going to share! 11:16
Do you know what Jon Bon Jovi, Nikki Sixx, Marilyn Monroe and a ton of male Hollywood actors have in common?
They have their moon in one particular sign, in their natal birth chart.

And my theory is, that it is this placement that makes us all feel safe to lean in, curious to learn more.
It could be the Capricorn Moon, that makes the movie star!

5. The life lesson in this Bon Jovi song 17:00
Containing your emotions?
Not always bad thing!
I know that repressing your emotions has got a bad reputation – because it’s one of the pillars of thousands of years of toxic masculinity (where men were shamed for having emotions) – but today’s song shows us that having your emotions spill over in the connection can be equally toxic.
And also that we, the public tend to feel very safe with movie stars who are able to repress their emotions.

Next stop, another outtake:
Judgement Day!
